Alaska Pacific University issued the following announcement on Feb. 1.
Jason grew up in Barrow, Alaska exploring the state’s landscapes and participating in various outdoor adventures. He attended Alaska Pacific University and graduated in the Fall of 2002 with a degree in Outdoor Studies. Jason would continue his explorations around the world, but it was a kite surfing trip to the Philippines that ultimately lead to an unexpected discovery.
How did you first learn about Pili Nuts?
I used to work guiding mountains with the skills I learned at APU. I was injured (a long story), but I got really into kite surfing while traveling in Asia. I heard about a place in the north of the Philippines that had epic winds and waves, and no one ever goes there! A light bulb went off I’m going there!!!!!!!!!!
In the Philippines, the food is heavily processed. We saw this nut and tried it and was blown away.!
I found out the region they came from and flew there to find out about the nut. I actually bought 10 pounds of them [nuts] and brought them back in my backpack. I purchased 100 plastic bags off the internet bought a sealing machine and a scale off Craigslist. Found a graphic artist off craigslist made a sticker put it on the bag walked into a store, and this is how Pili Hunters was formed. From there I was traveling up and down the west coast kite-surfing sleeping in my truck and trying to sell Pili Nuts.
